King of the Cotton narrates the lives and working conditions of seasonal workers in Çukurova using an tale-like narrative, through the eyes of a child. 8-year-old Toprak is not officially included in the civil registry and he doesn´t attend school. His 15-year-old sister Zehra was forced by her father to be engaged to a man who is nearly as old as her grandfather, in return for a high dowry. His younger sister Zeliha has lost her eyes due to poliomyelitis. Labour season comes and they set off for Çukurova, the fertile plains. Toprak, who doesn´t want Zeliha to learn about their hardship, begins to tell a tale.
