Master director Theo Angelopoulos dies in accident

One of the most revered directors of the world, Theo Angelopoulos died 24 January 2012 in a traffic crash.

Considered one of the most highly regarded directors of the world with masterpieces such as “Ulysses’ Gaze”, Eternity and A Day”, “The Travelling Players”, “The Suspended Step of the Stork”, “The Beekeeper” and “Landscape in the Mist”, Theo Angelopoulos was born in Athens in 1935. He was educated in law, tried his hand in writing poetry, articles and short stories. In 1961, he went to Paris to study literature at the Sorbonne. In 1962, he enrolled at the Paris Institute for Cinematographic Studies, the IDHEC. He returned to Greece in 1964 and started to work as a film critic, and later, between 1966 and 1968 as actor and production assistant. He made his first feature “Anaparastasis / Reconstruction” in 1970. The success he accomplished with his mostly awarded films has made him the most important Greek filmmaker of all time and one of the most original and innovative artists of our time.

Angelopoulos reflected near history, collective memory, memories and political incidents to the silver screen with a cinematically distorted perception of time. He had mentioned that Turkey and Greece were united by a common sea and 400-year-long common history, and as such he had made a profound impression on the cinema of Turkey and gathered an immense audience of admirers.

The Istanbul Film Festival had in 1989 and in 2000 presented his body of work, and screened his last film “The Dust of Time” at Filmekimi in 2009. Visiting the Festival in 1989 as the president of the jury of the Golden Tulip International Competition, Angelopoulos was also a guest of the Festival in 2000 to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award of the festival given by the then chairman of İKSV, Şakir Eczacıbaşı.

The death of Theo Angelopoulos, one of the most significant filmmakers and film philosophers of our age, is a huge loss for world cinema. The Istanbul Film Festival regrets the passing of not only a great filmmaker, but a close friend of the festival as well.
