Festival awards presented

Organised by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts and sponsored by Akbank, the 31st Istanbul Film Festival’s Golden Tulip Awards were presented at the closure gala and awards ceremony, which took place at Lütfi Kırdar Convention and Exhibition Centre, on Saturday, 14 April. The closure gala and the awards ceremony were presented by Memet Ali Alabora, and were streamed live on CNN TURK.

Golden Tulip International Competition Awards
The jury of the 31st Istanbul Film Festival Golden Tulip International Competition is headed by director Nuri Bilge Ceylan. The other members of the jury are the actor Alexander Fehling, director Brillante Mendoza, director Corneliu Porumboiu, and journalist Elçin Yahşi.

The Golden Tulip International Competition Award, which has been presented in memory of Şakir Eczacıbaşı for two years at the Istanbul Film Festival. The Golden Tulip International Competition Award is also supported with a 25,000 Euro monetary award given by the Eczacıbaşı Group. 10,000 Euro is given to the director who wins the Golden Tulip Award, the Turkish company to distribute the film receives 10,000 Euros, and the remaining 5,000 Euros is presented to the film that receives the Special Jury Prize.

This year, “The Golden Tulip International Competition Award” presented in memory of Şakir Eczacıbaşı was given to Julia Loktev’s The Loneliest Planet. The award was presented to Julia Loktev by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, the Jury President of the Golden Tulip International Competition. The monetary award, given by the Eczacıbaşı Group was presented by İlkay Yıldırım Akalın, Eczacıbaşı Holding Corporate Communications and Sustainable Development Director.

In the International Competition, the “Special Jury Prize” was given to Joachim Trier’s Oslo, August 31st. The award was handed to Ingrid Olava, actress of the film, by Nuri Bilge Ceylan.

Golden Tulip National Competition Awards
This year, the director, scriptwriter, poet and writer Murathan Mungan is the Jury President of the Golden Tulip National Competition. The other members of the jury are, director Yüksel Aksu, the representative of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival Dimitris Kerkinos, actress Nazan Kesal, who won the Best Actress Award last year in the National Competition of the festival, and Alexandre Mallet-Guy, film distributer and producer. This year 12 films, three of them Turkey premiere and five of them world premiere, competed in the Golden Tulip National Competition.

“The Golden Tulip Best National Film Award” is given to Emin Alper’s film, Beyond the Hill / Tepenin Ardı. The award was presented to Emin Alper and the producers Seyfi Teoman and Enis Köstepen by the Golden Tulip National Competition Jury President, Murathan Mungan.

“The Golden Tulip Best Director Award” was given to the director of Inside / Yeraltı, Zeki Demirkubuz. The award was handed to Zeki Demirkubuz by Tayfun Pirselimoğlu, the last year’s winner of the Golden Tulip Best National Film.

In the National Competition, 150.000 TL monetary award is given to the winner of the Best National Film Award; the 50.000 TL monetary award is given to the winner of the Best Director Award.

M. Tayfur Aydın’s film İz–Rêç / Trace received the “Special Jury Prize” of the National Competition, which is given in memory of Onat Kutlar. The director was handed his award by the Golden Tulip National Competition Jury Member, director Yüksel Aksu. The Special Jury Prize is supported with monetary award by Efes, the theme sponsor of the National Competition of the festival from this year on. 30.000 USD monetary award was presented by Özlem Çitçi, Efes Turkey Marketing Manager, to M. Tayfur Aydın for his next film.

“The Best Actress” award was given to Sanem Öge with her performance at Present Tense / Şimdiki Zaman. Her award was presented by Alexander Fehling, the jury member of the Golden Tulip International Competition.

This year “The Best Actor Award” was received by Engin Günaydın with his performance in Inside / Yeraltı. The actor received his award from the Golden Tulip National Competition Jury Member and last year’s winner of the Best Actress Award, Nazan Kesal. 10,000 TL each monetary award is given to the award-winning actor and actresses.

In this year’s National Competition, Emin Alper with his film Beyond the Hill / Tepenin Ardı and Orhan Eskiköy with his film The Voice of My Father / Babamın Sesi shared “The Best Screenplay of The Year Award.” Emin Alper and Orhan Eskiköy received their awards from the Golden Tulip National Competition Jury Member, Alexandre Mallet-Guy, from Memento Films.

“The Best Director of Photography Award’’ of the Istanbul Film Festival’s National Competition was given to Türksoy Gölebeyi with Inside / Yeraltı and presented by Uğur İçbak, director of photography.

In the Golden Tulip National Competition “The Best Music Award” was given to Mustafa Biber with the film Trace / İz-Reç by clarinet virtuoso Barbaros Erköse whose documentary Can’t Live Without You / Sensiz Yaşanmaz was screened in festival.

Zeki Demirkubuz with his film Inside / Yeraltı won the “The Best Editing Award” of the Golden Tulip National Competition given for the first time, this year. Zeki Demirkubuz received his award from the Golden Tulip National Competition Jury Member, Dimitris Kerkinos, representative of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival

FIPRESCI National and International Competition Awards
The International Federation of Film Critics FIPRESCI Awards were given to Andrea Arnold’s film Wuthering Heights / Uğultulu Tepeler in the International Competition and to Emin Alper with his film Beyond the Hill / Tepenin Ardı in the National Competition. The awards were handed to Emin Alper and Nejdet Arkın from Horizon Film, the distributor of the film in Turkey on behalf of Andrea Arnold, by FIPRESCI Jury President Pamela Bienzóbas.

The FIPRESCI Jury of the 31st Istanbul Film Festival presided over by Pamela Bienzóbas and composed of Kerem Akça, Noura Borsali, Nicole Santé, Erman Ata Uncu and Dieter Wieczorek.

Film Award of the Council of Europe (FACE)
The Human Rights Jury of the 31st Istanbul Film Festival composed of director Juanita Wilson, winner of last year’s FACE Award with As If I Am Not There; Director General of Human Rights and Rule of Law of the Council of Europe, Philippe Boillat, founder and chair of the board of Anadolu Kültür, Osman Kavala, and Eurimages project manager Alessia Sonaglioni.

The Film Award of the Council of Europe FACE, given in cooperation with the Council of Europe and Eurimages and the 10,000 Euro monetary award presented in scope of “Human Rights in Cinema” competition, was deemed to be deserved by the film Just the Wind / Sadece Rüzgâr by Hungarian director Bence Fliegauf.

The award was presented by Juanita Wilson and was handed to Bence Fliegauf by Ambassador Rauf Engin Soysal, Permanent Representative of Turkey to the Council of Europe.

In the scope of “Human Rights in Cinema” competition, the Special Jury Prize was shared by Anca Damian’s Crulic–The Path to Beyond and Emanuele Crialese’s Terraferma. Rauf Engin Soysal presented his award to Emanuele Crialese and Anca Damian’s award will be sent later as she could not attend the ceremony.

Radikal Newspaper People’s Choice Award
The People’s Choice Award, given by the Radikal Newspaper, is presented both in the scope of the National and the International Competitions, and determined by the votes of the audience.

The Radikal Newspaper Supplements Director Cem Erciyes and İlksen Başarır, director of Merry Go Round / Atlıkarınca, winner of last year’s award, announced the winners of the People’s Choice Award. In the International Competition Rodrigo García’s Albert Nobbs, and in the National Competition Zeki Demirkubuz’s film Inside / Yeraltı won the awards. A drawing between the voters of Radikal People’s Chocie Award will determine two lucky festival followers who will travel to the Rome Film Festival as guests of Radikal Newspaper.

After the 31th Istanbul Film Festival Awards Ceremony, the guests watched Paolo and Vittorio Taviani’s film Caesar Must Die.

The 31th Istanbul Film Festival events continued with an after party at Salon İKSV hosted by Efes Turkey. The festival’s national and international guests, the actors and directors of the films that competed for the Golden Tulip Competitions, industry professionals as well as the distinguished figures of film circles attended the party.

The winner of the Golden Tulip Award in the National Competition Beyond the Hill / Tepenin Ardı will be screened once more on Sunday 15 April at 16.00 pm at Beyoğlu Cinema, and The Loneliest Planet which won the Golden Tulip Award in the International Competition will be screened at 21.30 in the same hall. The 31th Istanbul Film Festival will end on Sunday evening after the 21.30 screenings at six festival cinemas.
