The 32nd Istanbul Film Festival kicks off on 30 March!

Turkey’s biggest cinema event with 140.000 followers each year, the Istanbul Film Festival begins on 30 March. The festival keeping its leading position with the variety and quality of the films presented promises two whole weeks full of a film programme with more than 200 films under more than 20 sections, panels, workshops and master classes with expert film makers to cinephiles.

The festival will meet the audience this year with a wide spectrum selection expanding new feature films of 2012 and 2013, unforgettable classic films, masterpieces of master directors, films having premiered in Sundance in January and in Berlin International Film Festival in February, Golden Tulip and FACE Competitions to documentaries, and children films. The festival programme includes a new section titled “Stories of Women” as well as “From Literature to Silver Screen” section which comes back after a long break, and special sections such as “Am I Not a Citizen?” in collaboration with the 13th Istanbul Biennial to start in September and “Reality is a Miracle: Carlos Reygadas”.

The programme of the 32nd Istanbul Film Festival was announced on Monday, 4 March at the press meeting held in Martı Istanbul Hotel with the participation of İKSV General Manager Görgün Taner, Akbank General Manager Hakan Binbaşgil and Istanbul Film Festival Director Azize Tan.

İKSV General Manager Görgün Taner who delivered the opening speech of the meeting thanked to the sponsors of the festival and stated that a new collaboration has been featured for the posters of 2013 Istanbul Festivals, in which the artworks and handwritings of leading artists from different fields are brought together by graphic designer and İKSV Corporate Identity Advisor Bülent Erkmen. For the 32nd Istanbul Film Festival, the photograph Sleepless Night (Uykusuz Gece) by Nuri Bilge Ceylan and the director’s hand writing was turned into the festival poster with the design of the İKSV Corporate Identity Advisor Bülent Erkmen. During the press meeting, a special video message by Bülent Erkmen on the festival poster was presented to the participants through the screen.

Akbank General Manager Hakan Binbaşgil stated that culture and arts have always been among their priorities and added: “The Istanbul Film Festival represents a turning point for institutionalisation of culture and arts in Turkey. The festival provides an opportunity to strengthen the cinema culture in Turkey with deep roots. We are proud that we are the sponsor of the festival, which meets the cinephiles with the most prominent and original films of the world for 32 years, for the ninth time.” Binbaşıgil continued his speech by reminding that they commemorate Şakir Eczacıbaşı who lead the project with his vision: “Cinephiles wait for this event with excitement each year and the festival again presents a programme full of amazing films. The films we chose for Akbank Galas are again fabulous this year. Thousands of cinephiles will have the opportunity to experience different worlds, and live in different dreams even for two hours in movie theatres.”

Azize Tan, Director of the Istanbul Film Festival, taking the floor in the press conference gave detailed information about the festival programme, guests, and events.

The opening ceremony of the 32nd Istanbul Film Festival will be held on Friday, 29 March at Lütfi Kırdar Convention and Exhibition Centre. Memet Ali Alabora will be the host of the opening ceremony to be broadcast live on CNN Türk. Right after the ceremony, I’m So Excited by Pedro Almodovar, which will be screened in Akbank Galas section, will be shown as the opening film of the festival.

The closing and awards ceremony of the 32nd Istanbul Film Festival will be held on Sunday, 14 April at Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall and will be broadcast live on NTV. Ceyda Düvenci and Mert Fırat will host the evening in which the Golden Tulips and other awards of the festival will be presented. After the ceremony, the film winning the International Golden Tulip Award will be screened for one last time.

Cinema Honorary Awards of the Istanbul Film Festival will be presented at the opening ceremony to actress Lale Belkıs, cinematographer Aytekin Çakmakçı, actor Ahmet Mekin and scriptwriter Ayşe Saşa for their great effort for Turkish cinema since many years. Ayşe Şasa’s screenplay Ah Güzel İstanbul / Oh Beautiful Istanbul (1996) directed by Atıf Yılmaz in 1996, Kalbimin Efendisi / Master of My Heart featuring Lale Belkıs, and Bir Türk’e Gönül Verdim / I Loved A Turk featuring Ahmet Mekin are included in the festival programme.

Master director Costa Gavras will be presented with the Cinema Honorary Award of the festival before the screening of his latest film Capital within “Akbank Galas” section on Sunday, 7 April at Atlas Movie Theatre at 13.30. The director will give a master class moderated by Alin Taşcıyan on the same day at Akbank Sanat at 16.00.

The last Cinema Honorary Award of this year’s festival will be presented to Peter Weir, the head of jury of the 32nd Istanbul Film Festival International Golden Tulip Competition. Director Peter Weir well known with Gallipoli, Dead Poets Society, Green Card and The Truman Show will be presented with the award at the closing and award ceremony to be held at Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall on Sunday, 14 April. The director will also give a master class on Friday, 12 April at 16.00 at Boğaziçi University Mithat Alam Film Center within the scope of the festival.

Festival screenings will take place at 6 movie theatres: Atlas, Beyoğlu, and Pera Museum in Beyoğlu, City’s in Nişantaşı, Feriye in Ortaköy and Rexx in Kadıköy. Film screenings are: 11.00, 13.30, 16.00, 19.00 and 21.30. In highly anticipated “Midnight Madness” section a film will be screened every Saturday at 00.00 during the festival.

Tickets for the 32nd Istanbul Film Festival will be on sale beginning on Saturday, 16 March at 10.00. The tickets can be  purchased through:

Ticket prices for the 32nd Istanbul Film Festival are determined as 15 TL, student and senior (over 65) as 10 TL. Off-price tickets for morning sessions will continue this year; the morning sessions (11.00, 13.30, and 16.00) will be only 5 TL. Ticket prices for Akbank Galas are 15 TL.

Tulip Card holders will have the chance to enjoy lowest ticket prices during the festival. Tulip card holders will enjoy special discounts up to 25%. Pre-sale for Tulip members will start on 12 March. Black Tulip members can purchase their tickets on 12 March while White, Red, and Yellow Tulip members can purchase their tickets on 13, 14, and 15 March. Tulip members can purchase their pre-sale ticket from festival theatres Atlas, Beyoğlu, and Rexx.

Festival Sponsor AKBANK presents a significant advantage to Axess card holders. Axess Card holders will enjoy 20% special discount for the tickets purchased during the festival (except for morning sessions in weekdays).
