A war-torn country covered with snow... An eight-year-old boy and his ill mother are travelling by train. On the way, however, the mother deteriorates, and they are forced to abandon the train in a nameless town. As the mother is admitted to a hospital, she tells him that, if anything should happen, he should go back and search for the house with a turret. Through the boy´s eyes, we witness the state of an exhausted society benumbed by ever-present death, and indifferent to the suffering of others. The film is based on a story by the Jewish Ukrainian writer Friedrich Gorenstein, who also penned the script for Tarkovsky´s Solaris. "The starting point of Gorenstein is pain, hurt and anger. And also an incredible humanity and longing for human warmth that haven´t let me go for many years. And for all these years I have had a very strong desire to make films based on this prose. Among those who also wanted to film it before were Yuri Klepikov and Gorenstein´s close friend Andrei Tarkovsky. The main character is a little boy, based on Gorenstein himself, who endures real ordeals and suffering." - Eva Neymann

The director will be introducing the film on 11 APRIL THURSDAY, ATLAS, 16.00.
