"Are you happy?" This simple yet provocative question was the springboard for this cinematic analysis of the socio-political realities of early-1960s France by the filmmaker and anthropologist Jean Rouch and the sociologist Edgar Morin. Composed of interviews with a wide array of people, from artists to factory workers to African students, Chronicle of a Summer is a fascinating portrait of Paris and its inhabitants. It changed the course of documentary filmmaking.
