AM I NOT A CITIZEN? – BARBARISM, CIVIC AWAKENING AND THE CITY
2003 Houston Special Jury Prize
Austria 2000: For the first time since World War II, the extreme-right party has become part of the government. As a response, the German artist Christoph Schlingensief decides to imitate the Big Brother reality TV show by installing a container surveilled by a multitude of cameras in Vienna´s touristic heart, and inviting asylum seekers to spend a week there. Audiences at home are asked to vote on which asylum seekers will be deported. Soon enough, the project spins out of control. Paul Poet´s documentary covers the events while raising questions regarding xenophobia, the popular media, democracy, and public space.
