In her first feature length film, Tunisian director Leyla Bouzid depicts the atmosphere of her country several months prior to the historical milestone of the Jasmine Revolution in 2010 through the prism of a mother-daughter relation. Farah, an 18-year-old singer of a political rock band, wants to experience life, love, and music to the fullest, while her mother worries that her daughter might encounter the dark face of the state, like she once did. The film displays the mood of Tunisian youth before the revolution and the state order that hovers over them as it portrays the calm before the storm through depictions of strong female characters. Tunisian singer Ghalia Benali, who gives a stand-out performance as the mother, will be performing at Salon on Tuesday, 12 April as part of the Festival´s events.
