Adapted from Guy de Maupassant’s first novel dated 1883, A Woman’s Life is a modern and unusual period drama which follows the 27 years of Baroness Jeanne’s life, which starts idyllically in a chateau and continues with her marriage and the birth of her son, but her zest for life is gradually replaced with disappointments. French director Stéphane Brizé (The Measure of a Man) offers the portrait of a woman in the arms of despair in a male-dominated society and with a hand-held camera and a point of view that pays regard to social circumstances captures a certain realism where details take over the grandeur to bring substance to his characters.
