One of cinema’s great auteurs, Robert Bresson’s Four Nights of a Dreamer is a lyrical and minimalist adaptation of Dostoevsky’s short story ’White Nights.’ Set against the backdrop of 1970s Paris, the film tells the story of Jacques, a sensitive and reclusive young artist, and Marthe, a troubled woman caught in a web of unrequited love. Over the course of four nights, the two strangers meet on the bridges of the Seine, engaging in deep conversations that intertwine dreams, longing, and the fragility of human connection. The film eschews melodrama, instead capturing raw emotions and existential reflections. To be screened from its digitally restored copy, Four Nights of a Dreamer is a contemplative exploration of love and solitude. A must-watch for lovers of auteur cinema, for those who wish to rediscover Bresson, and to enjoy this simplistic masterpiece on the big screen.
