An intricate romantic policier, a thrilling, gorgeous Chinese noir, Fire on the Plain is former cinematographer Zhang Ji’s directorial debut, set in the country’s impoverished, industrial northeast in the late 1990s. Adapted from young novelist Shuang Xuetao’s popular work Moses on the Plain. Premiered at San Sebastian Film Festival in the main competition, Fire on the Plain follows working-class teen Li Fei who falls in love with the rich teen Shu. As awful weather ensues, factories shut down, a series of murders strikes the city. Eight years later, a young police officer, close to one of the victims, decides to reopen the investigation. Everyone and everything has changed now.

This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
