Born in 1945 in Adana, Salih Güney studied at the Ankara Conservatory Drama Department. 

Güney first took to the stage professionally in 1964. He worked as director, cinematographer, page layout, and copywriter for photo comics at Hürriyet daily's Kelebek insert between 1970 and 1974. He took camera operating course in Sweden, and TV-sketch training in the UK. He settled in the USA in 1979 where he worked as a travel agent, and returned to Turkey in 1996. He initiated the campaign "Culture is Best at its Own Home" and helped return the Heracles bust to Turkey in 2013. He led and supported many archaeological projects. He worked as instructor at Yalova Conservatory in 2008, and Yalova Fine Arts Faculty in acting, art history, and fencing.

The plays he acted in include Kaplan / TigerA Flea in Her EarYer Demir Gök Bakır / Iron EarthCopper SkyŞeytanın Oyunu / The 100 Candles Game, and İttihat Terakki. He started acting in film in 1965 with Bozuk Düzen / Corrupt System (Haldun Dormen). He was cast alongside Tony Curtis and Charles Bronson in You Can't Win Them All (1969). He appeared in around 130 feature films between 1965 and 2006 including Korkusuz Yaşayanlar (1965), Yasak Sokaklar (1965), O Kadın (1966), Aşk Hikâyesi (1971), Kaptan Swing (1971), Pamuk Prenses ve Yedi Cüceler / Snow White and the Seven Dwarves (1970), Haram (1983), Zifaf (1983), Güneşten de Sıcak (1978), Beyza’nın Kadınları / Shattered Soul (2006).
