Convinced that he is going to die soon, old poet Younghwan invites his two estranged sons to join him at a hotel. His attempt at reconciling with his sons becomes complicated when two beautiful, young women check in. In his Locarno-premiered new film Hotel by the River, Korean master Hong Sang-soo once again satisfies his fans with another one of his plain but nuanced human stories. Taking advantage of black & white film, the director deftly handles themes of family, friendship, death, forgiveness, and the passage of time.
