Berlin, 1931. The turbulent period before Hitler’s takeover, after the 1929 world-wide market crash. Jakob Fabian works in the advertising department of a cigarette factory during the day and drifts through bars, brothels and artist studios at night. He blames the current state of Germany on moral decadence and sexual liberty. He manages to shed his pessimistic attitude when he falls in love. But his world, along with that of the entire humanity is about to fall apart. Fabian was adapted from Erich Kästner’s novel, which was censured at its publishing and later burnt by the Nazis as “decadent asphalt literature.” With “modernist” tech devices borrowed from the period and archival footage enhancing the dramatic narrative, Fabian had its worldwide premiere at the 2021 Berlin International Film Festival.

This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
