Carrying the Cannes 2020 label, February is an unconventional portrait of what director Kamen Kalev describes as an unconventional figure: his grandfather Petar, a reserved but complex man. Shot on 16mm, Kalev’s third feature that follows Eastern Plays and The Island where he tackles relationship mechanics examines the life of a man at eight, eighteen and eighty-two years old: in his village as a child, his military service after his marriage; and the isolated place in the country where he prefers the wild nature over humans. Emphasising an atmosphere empowered by striking 16mm cinematography, February confirms Kamen Kalev as one of Bulgaria’s most proficient filmmakers.
