In the Earth is the perfect pandemics film. Ben Wheatley, the cult director behind Kill List, In the Field and High-Rise started to write the script, around March, right at the beginning, and made the film in August, when England’s first coronavirus lockdown eased last summer, shot in only 15 days with a low budget. In the Earth follows researcher Martin, who arrives at a national park to re-establish contact with his missing colleague, who’s supposed to be out in the dense forest investigating the land’s uncommonly fertile soil. But Martin and the park official Alma confront much more than they anticipate. “No one is talking about what has just happened... Covid is going to mark a generation,” says Wheatley for his latest film which can be described as an ecologic horror which premiered at the virtual Sundance 2021.
