2021 Berlin Best Screenplay
Winning the Best Director Award in 2020 with The Woman Who Ran, Hong Sang-soo wins the Best Screenplay Award in 2021 with his shorter but emotionally buoyant recent work. Returning to black and white, Sang-soo takes on the cinematography as well alongside the screenwriting, direction, editing, and the soundtrack composition of the film, which comprises of two halves separated by two years. In the first part, a young student arrives in Berlin to stay at a friend of her mother’s. In the second part, back in Korea, her boyfriend visits his own mother and meets her elderly friend. Naturally, Sang-soo’s recurring motifs such as bottles of soju, food tables, complex webs of relationship, long conversations find their way in the film.
