2021 Istanbul Golden Tulip Best Film

Madalena opens with the image of the dead body of the titular trans woman Madalena, discovered lying in a soy field, dressed in white. And afterwards, we observe three people who are not connected with each other but related somehow to Madalena: Luziane, a club hostess, who survives by the skin of her teeth; wealthy Cristiano tries to prove himself to his demanding father; Bianca and her girlfriends divide Madalena’s things between them. Set in the rarely filmed agrarian western Brazil, where director Marcheti was born, Madalena critically observes our hinged off world and Brazil, which has the highest rate of murder of trans people in the world. The debut feature of Brazilian director Madiano Marcheti had its world premiere in February in Rotterdam where it was in the main competition.
