Competing for the Golden Bear at the 2021 Berlin Film Festival, this powerful family drama unfolds in retrospect to examine the shades of history that fall on personal stories. Maia, a single mother, lives in Montreal with her teenage daughter, Alex. On Christmas Eve, they receive an unexpected delivery: a box with journals, tapes, and photos Maia entrusted to her best friend in Beirut in the 1980. Maia refuses to open the box that refers to her long-gone past, but Alex secretly begins to enter the world of her mother’s tumultuous, passionate adolescence during the Lebanese civil war, unlocking mysteries of a hidden past. Questioning the role of memory in creating images and writing contemporary history, the directing duo have inspired from Hadjithomas’ own journals and Joreige’s war photographs to make their most mature and accomplished film to date.
The lead actress of the film, Manal Issa will be present at the screening on July 3, 18.00 at Atlas 1948 Cinema.
This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
