Daniel Brühl is one of Germany’s most versatile and most acclaimed actors, from his breakout performance in Good Bye, Lenin to Hollywood productions like Inglourious Basterds and Rush. Next Door is Brühl’s directorial debut which premiered at the 2021 Berlinale in the main competition. In the film, Brühl plays an actor called Daniel, who meets Bruno, a man claiming to be his next door neighbour. Bruno has a low opinion on Daniel’s acting, and it turns out that the dislike seems to go much deeper. Next Door is a dark comedy that is set in a bar in the gentrified East Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg, where Brühl currently resides in.
