Theme Sponsor

Expanding her fan base with the success of The Portrait of A Lady on Fire, Céline Sciamma returns to the sweet though challenging years of childhood as in Tomboy and My Life as a Courgette. Premiering within the main competition at the 2021 Berlin Film Festival, Petite Maman opens with the death of eight-year-old Nelly’s grandmother. As Nelly plays along the places where her mother Marion used to play when she was a child, Marion suddenly disappears, and Nelly meets a girl her own age, called Marion. Delving into the mysteries of life from a female perspective, Sciamma this time draws inspiration from the films of Hayao Miyazaki and Chantal Akerman to turn her camera towards the intersection of remembrance and imagination to tell a unique coming-of-age story. Young Marion and Nelly are played by twin sisters Gabrielle and Joséphine Sanz.

This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
