'What is the limit of empathy when you think about the problems of others? Are we happier when we do a good deed, or do we only do good deeds when we are happy?' Romanian director Radu Muntean challenges our notions of altruism, sacrifice, and best intentions in his latest film which premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight programme at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. The film follows three friends, who are on their regular end-of-the-year humanitarian trip. They all drive in their big SUVs to reach distant villages in Transylvania and offer their standard bags of goodies to the locals. When their car gets stuck in a ditch in the woods, and they’re forced to spend the night in an isolated sawmill together with a senile old man, their ideas about empathy and helpfulness are challenged. Playing with thriller and social drama genre conventions, întregalde is co-written by Razvan Radulescu and Radu Muntean, whose Un etaj mai jos / One Floor Below (2015) and Alice T. (2018) were screened at the festival.
