François Ozon gives Fassbinder’s all-female 1972 drama The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant a makeover, removing the ‘bitter tears’ and flipping the genders. In the opening film of the 2022 Berlin Film Festival, Petra is Peter now, a successful, famous film director, who strongly evokes Fassbinder himself. He lives with his silent assistant Karl, whom he likes to mistreat and humiliate. Through the great actress Sidonie, he meets and falls in love with handsome young Amir. He offers to share his apartment and help Amir break into the world of cinema. François Ozon’s breakthrough in 2000 was with Gouttes d’eau sur pierres brulantes / Water Drops on Burning Rocks, an adaptation of the stage play by Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Peter von Kant is a playful, colourful, entertaining homage to Fassbinder that tackles obsession, humiliation, inspiration, celebrity, seduction, and solitude.

This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
