Premiering at the Critics Week at Cannes where it was lauded to be 'among the most accomplished and strongest films to be seen at Cannes this year' by Paris Match, Softie examines the strong bond between a sensitive, intelligent, curious and interested, 'soft natured' boy and his newly arrived teacher. The latest feature by Samuel Theis, who observed his own mother in Party Girl with which he visited the festival in 2015, is largely autobiographical: 'It’s a film about an awakening, every awakening. We are all branded at birth by social judgments. Some people succeed in escaping them, but that does not prevent determinism developing. The film came out of that question: at what point in a child’s life does the desire for emancipation emerge?'
This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
