2021 Bergen Cinema Extraordinaire Award

Michel Franco’s Sundown, the follow-up to his highly controversial Nuevo orden / New Order which was included in the 2021 Istanbul Film Festival programme, premiered at 2021 Venice Film Festival. Unlike New Order, this story follows a wealthy man, a woman and two youths on holiday in the heavenly beach resort, Acapulco. The holiday is calm and pleasant, until disturbing news arrives. We realize that no one and nothing is what it seems; while personal tensions are rising, the social unrest that we are used to in Michel Franco’s films surfaces from the depths in Sundown, which is filled with twists and turns.
