The Colossus of Rhodes belongs to the sword and sandal wave of film of the Italian cinema prevalent in the 1950s and 1960s. Set in the 3rd century BCE, the film follows the events as the Athenian war hero Darios is involved in two separate conspiracies to overthrow the tyrannical ruler of Rhodes– by Rhodian patriots and by Phoenician agents–evoking the conflict of good and evil, and including several scenes depicting slaves' uprising, torture chambers, and sword fights. Although Sergio Leone was not completely satisfied with the outcome of his debut film as writer-director that he was credited with his actual name, The Colossus of Rhodes is nevertheless memorable with its ceremonial dances, and especially the iconic sword fight that takes place above the titular statue. The film is the only Leone title that is not scored by Ennio Morricone.

This film is screened with the generous support of the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Istanbul.

This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
