The first feature-length film by Turkish-German filmmaker Engin Kundağ, Ararat made its world premiere at the 2023 Berlinale within the Perspektive Deutsches Kino section. A destructive young woman, Zeynep, is accused of intentionally causing a car accident to harm her boyfriend. She flees from Berlin to her parents’ house in the Turkish province, close to a dormant volcano, the Ağrı Mountain. With her sexual aggression and self-destructive behaviour, she turns her parents’ deadlocked marriage and an entire society upside down, to spew repressed feelings and secrets like molten rock from within silence – but not the dormant demons from her past.
This film is screened with the generous support of the German Films.
This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
