2023 Berlin Best Cinematography
The feature debut of Giacomo Abbruzzese, Disco Boy world premiered at the Berlin Film Festival where it won a silver bear for outstanding artistic contribution. Disco Boy stars Franz Rogowski as Aleksei, a Belarussian, who travels across Europe without any documentation to enlist in the French Foreign Legion to be granted a French passport. In the Niger Delta, Jomo, an eco-rebel, fights against oil companies that threaten the survival of his village. His sister Udoka, meanwhile, dreams of escaping. Now a commando, Aleksei is sent there on a mission. Beyond borders, life and death, their destinies will intertwine? Visually arresting to the beat of electronic music, Disco Boy delves into the unknown, the darkness of human soul, ‘gradually becomes a bit psychedelic, mysterious, shamanic,’ as Abbruzese puts it, ‘I wanted to make a war film where both perspectives, both sides were fully explored.’
This film is screened with the generous support of the Istituto Italiano di Cultura.
This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
