Debut feature by writer-director-lead actor Juraj Lerotić, who won both the best director and the best actor honours in Sarajevo, Safe Place is also declared as Croatian Oscars’ entry. A sincere, tense, heart-wrenching, sensitive exploration of mental health conditions taking their toll on family integrity, Safe Place is an autobiographical family drama with the writer-director Lerotić playing himself. A traumatic event creates a rift in the family’s everyday life. Their lives fundamentally change, as if they are waging a war invisible to everyone else, because Damir has attempted suicide, and his mother and brother, over a course of 24 hours, will try to protect him from himself, as well as the hostile system.
