The Exorcist is arguably the most famous horror film ever made and one of the most influential—culturally and cinematically. Adapted to screen by William Peter Blatty, based on his 1971 best-selling novel of the same name, The Exorcist follows the struggle of two Catholic priests against an evil entity that takes hold of the body of a young girl. Rumours that the film was cursed, the unusually harsh and strict filming conditions, the alleged subliminal images, the violent physical reactions that some audience members suffered, or lawsuits did not stop it from being nominated in the Best Film category of the Oscars—the first horror film to do so. The wake of the surprising critical and commercial success The Exorcist achieved brought forth numerous exorcism cases, sequels, remakes, and fantastic films with a similar template–the fight of a good ‘sorcerer’ against evil, elaborated with special effects–and helped legitimise the genre.

*Scenes of violence/sex might disturb some viewers.

This film is screened with the generous support of the U.S. Mission to Turkey.

This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
