As Hollywood was staggering in the mire of TV, a new generation of exciting filmmakers emerged making great and memorable films in the early 1970s that explored the true nature of the USA. Young director William Friedkin with The French Connection was one of the stellar names who belonged to the New Hollywood generation and brought a fast-paced, gritty and realistic fresh breath to the crime genre. Written by Ernest Tidyman (also responsible for Shaft) the film follows New York detective Popeye (Gene Hackman) and his partner Buddy (Roy Scheider) who uncover an international drug-smuggling operation from France to the USA. A superb neo-noir crime thriller The French Connection boasts foremost having the greatest car chase sequence in film history, documentary street realism inspired by political thrillers, and being one of the greatest New York movies ever made, turning out to be a huge success both critically and at the box office.

This film is screened with the generous support of the U.S. Mission to Turkey.

This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
