2022 São Paulo Best International Documentary
Through little-seen archive and his characteristically cinematic analysis, Mark Cousins narrates the ascent of fascism in Italy and its fall-out across 1930s Europe. Both essay-film and historical document, Cousins’s new film, which premiered at Venice, contextualises history through the now, holding a mirror to a political landscape of a creeping far right and manipulated media. Narrated by actress Alba Rohrwacher, the film takes its title from the infamous demonstration and march of fascists in 1922 to overthrow the government that resulted with the ascent of Benito Mussolini to power. Multi-award-winning Marc Cousins is a documentarist, whose earlier films The Story of Film: An Odyssey, The Eyes of Orson Welles, and I Am Belfast were screened at the festival.
This film is screened with the generous support of the Istituto Italiano di Cultura.
This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
