2024 Sundance Grand Jury Prize–Documentary
In A New Kind of Wilderness, filmmaker Silje Evensmo Jacobsen captures an intimate and soulful portrait of love, life, and growing up. Maria and Nik, together with their four children, embrace self-sufficiency, home-schooling and want to live an independent family life in harmony with nature. However, when tragedy strikes and everything changes, they are forced from their idyllic farm and into the expectations of modern society. A New Kind of Wilderness has premiered at Sundance where the jury praised the film for being ‘embedded with deep humanism and a sensitivity and vulnerability that never veers into sentimentalism’ and presented the Grand Jury Prize. The family’s journey, their triumphs and struggles, invite reflection on our own life choices, our responsibility to the planet and our children, and how we navigate life after loss.
This film is screened with the kind contribution of the Royal Norwegian Embassy.
This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
