Wim Wenders’ Alice in the Cities, the first film in his ‘Road Movie trilogy’ (he himself often refers to it as ‘his first film’) follows a German journalist named Philip struggling with writer’s block in the US. He encounters Lisa, a German woman, who entrusts him with her young daughter Alice before vanishing. As Philip embarks on a cross-country search for Lisa – from New York to Munich – he forms an unexpected and touching bond with Alice. Wenders’ signature black-and-white visuals, long takes, and focus on landscapes define the film, which has been praised for its performances, evocative and melancholic beauty, elaboration on Europe and the USA, and exploration of human connection, roots, and creativity, and for its lasting impact on the road film genre in the landscape of cinema. Alice in the Cities celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.
This film is screened with the kind contribution of Goethe Institut Istanbul and German Films.
This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
