Often forcing boundaries, Carlos Reygadas, in his second feature, signals the dilemma of the individual in the class and social structure of Mexico. Set in Mexico City, the story features a middle-aged man, who drives a general, and his wife who are responsible for the death of a baby they had abducted in order to make easy money. While the driver struggles with this horrid secret, he adopts a regular routine of sexual relations with the general’s daughter. Although this relationship seems to break some sort of inter-class barrier, the consequence of this ‘delusion’ turns out to be a violent reflection of guilt and rage. Battle in Heaven still splits the critics and audiences with the graphic sex scenes and its sometimes unconventional narrative.
*Scenes of violence/sex might disturb some viewers.
This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
