After spending four years in jail for vandalising his place of work due to a mental breakdown, Rafik has only one plan: take his son to the mountains and show him his incredible and amazing discovery. Inspired by the image of a man flying off a cliff, Tunisian director Mohamed Ben Attia (Weldi / Dear Son, Inhebek Hedi / Hedi) who visited the Festival in 2019, describes his latest film imbued with magical realism as ‘the story of a man who violently breaks free from his banal environment, subtracting himself from society with its principles, codes, and institutions. I wanted to show a man capable of widening the spectrum of possible in a country which has become schizophrenic, a world that has become absurd.’ Co-produced by Jean-Pierre et Luc Dardenne, Behind the Mountains had its world premiere at the Orizzonti Section of the Venice International Film Festival.
This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
