A mystery thriller compared to Saltburn that builds up its suspense to a disconcerting finale. A family’s fate becomes intertwined with their only teenager son’s enigmatic new friend. Mostly reticent, Shuo is reserved even at school, but feels comfortable amongst them. As Shuo becomes increasingly integrated into their lives, the parents are also charmed. But, a tragic event causes unspoken secrets, unmet expectations, and untended emotions to resurface from beneath the sleek and prosperous façade. Lin Jianjie’s feature directorial debut premiered at Sundance and was screened at Berlinale’s Forum section.
This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
