1980 Berlin Best Director

The first of Szabó’s films to be nominated for an Oscar that led to the globally successful ‘great trilogy’ of Mephisto (1981), Colonel Redl (1985) and Hanussen (1988). Confidence is set at the end of the Second World War and follows two resistance members who must pose as husband and wife to stay safe from the Nazis, even though they are two complete strangers, each married to other people. The style of Confidence was completely new in comparison to Szabó’s earlier films. The Kafkaesque film works primarily with close-ups, and viewers are solely in the story’s present, in the backstage of a chamber drama.

This film is screened as part of the Turkish-Hungarian Cultural Year with the kind contribution of of the Liszt Institute Hungarian Culture Center and the Hungarian National Film Institute.

This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
