Cu Li Never Cries recounts the stifling summer days that stir up a whirlwind of events and emotions in the life of Lady M, a blue collar retiree in Hanoi, who once worked in East Germany as a labour export worker. Lady M tries to cling onto dimming links to her past after inheriting a pygmy slow loris (ping pong ball-size adorable and venomous pet, a cu li) from her long-estranged German husband. Meanwhile, her pregnant niece prepares for marriage which she strongly opposes. The present and the complex echoes of Vietnamese history intertwine with dreams, a fire, and a wedding celebration. Cu Li Never Cries had its international premiere at the Berlinale Panorama section.
