Music video, commercial and feature film director, the innovative filmmaker Tarsem Singh, best known for The Cell, and The Fall, returns to behind the camera after an eight-year hiatus, with his first film set in India that premiered at Toronto Film Festival. Dear Jassi is the true-life Romeo and Juliet tale of a young couple who are desperate to be together but are kept apart. The film is set in the 90s, when on a trip from Canada to visit her extended family in India, Jassi meets Mithu, a sweet rickshaw driver, and the two fall in love. However, everything is against them uniting, starting with their cruel families, geography, and the brutal universe in general. Dear Jassi chronicles a tragic romance that transcends time and space, ‘a love story, but with a grisly murder at its centre,’ as put by Singh who was inspired by a real life incident.
This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
