2023 Lima Special Jury Prize, Critics Honorable Mention

A western movie in the vein of Glauber Rocha that searches for an answer to the question ‘Where is progress taking us?’ The most recent film by Lisandro Alonso, the director of Jauja, Liverpool and Los Muertos, was first screened at Cannes Premiere. About native populations in South America living in the Amazon and the Native Americans who live on a patch of land allocated to them, Eureka is a complex film set in an ambiguous time, that examines history, identity, nature, cultural confrontation, and colonialism. The film follows Alaina, who is tired of being a police officer in the Pine Ridge Reservation. She decides to begin her journey with the help of her grandfather: she will become a bird, fly through time and space to South America, and everything will feel different when she hears the dreams of other people. ‘I want to establish connections between the passage of time and the different cultures that have inhabited this land since the very beginning, before colonisation.’ –Lisandro Alonso

This film is screened with the kind contribution of the Embassy of Portugal and the Camões Institute.

This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
