A poignant look at how any absurd situation might turn into a political weapon. It’s summer in Budapest. High school student Abel is struggling to focus on his final exams, whilst coming to the realisation that he is hopelessly in love with his best friend Janka. The studious Janka has her own unrequited love with married history teacher Jakab, who had a previous confrontation with Abel’s conservative father. The tensions of a polarised society come unexpectedly to the surface when Abel’s history graduation exam turns into a national scandal upon a seemingly trivial confrontation with his teachers. Taking off from a highly politicised and lively recent conflict in the Hungarian nation, Gábor Reisz (For Some Inexplicable Reason, Bad Poems) says, ‘I believe that if normal, human communication ceases, no one can grow; after all, this is one of the foundations of a livable society.’
This film is screened as part of the Turkish-Hungarian Cultural Year with the kind contribution of of the Liszt Institute Hungarian Culture Center and the Hungarian National Film Institute.
This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
