Starring Jude Law as Henry VIII and Alicia Vikander as Katherine Parr, Firebrand is a sumptuous thriller, a period piece with a quietly rising tension toward revenge. The stakes are high in this power game between the cruel and merciless king and the confident and benevolent queen: the Queen’s head. In blood-soaked Tudor England, Katherine Parr, the sixth and last wife of King Henry VIII, is named Regent while tyrant Henry is fighting overseas. Katherine has done everything she can to push for a new future based on her radical Protestant beliefs. When an increasingly ailing and paranoid King returns, he turns his fury on the radicals and Katherine, who finds herself fighting for her own survival. Everyone holds their breath in the palace. Based on the 2013 novel Queen’s Gambit, Firebrand premiered at Cannes Film Festival. Brazilian filmmaker Karim Aïnouz had won the Special Jury Prize at the Istanbul Film Festival in 2022 with Mariner of the Mountains.
This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
