Is there a sure way to grow up? Even when girls will be girls in a men’s world? In a strict boarding school nestled in the Himalayas, Mira discovers desire and romance; but her sexual, rebellious awakening is disrupted by her mother who never got to come-of-age herself. To Mira, her best years are hijacked. The tension rises and rises. First-time feature director Shuchi Talati portrays a complex mother-daughter relationship and adolescent self-discovery with all its conflicting emotions. Director Talati shot Girls Will Be Girls by a mostly female crew to ensure the comfort of the cast, ‘open up mental space,’ and ‘totally out of spite.’ ‘I went to a school where we were heavily policed. We were made to feel ashamed of our sexuality and our bodies. So I would say I started writing from a place of rebellion.’
This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
