The first Sudanese film to be selected for the Cannes Film Festival, and the country’s first ever Oscar nominee, Goodbye Julia is a powerful and moving drama that follows two desperate women in the shadow of impending war. Wracked by guilt after covering up a murder, Mona – a former popular singer from northern Sudan – tries to make amends by taking in the deceased’s unsuspecting southern Sudanese widow, Julia and her son. A meditation on grief, guilt, identity, and racism, Goodbye Julia offers a rare glimpse into the psyche and quotidian life of the divided Sudanese nation. Goodbye Julia is the debut feature film by self-taught filmmaker Mohamed Kordofani, produced by acclaimed Sudanese filmmaker Amjad Abu Alala, director of You Will Die At Twenty.
This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
