To love someone is accepting their true selves, which sometimes might prove to be hideous. André and Vera are a young entrepreneurial couple. They get the opportunity to pitch their female health app at a prestigious competition. Before going there, Vera tries hypnotherapy to quit smoking. The therapy works, but in unimaginable ways: she loses all social inhibitions. André is confused, but mostly mortified, panicking and stressing when he witnesses Vera’s unpredictable demeanour. An uncomfortable, cringe-fest that calls for laughing to the extreme, The Hypnosis is a hilarious criticism of modern day virtue signalling and self-actualisation in a capitalistic world trying to normalise individuals beyond absurdity. Ernst De Geer’s directorial debut premiered at this year’s Karlovy Vary Film Festival, bringing Norwegian actor Herbert Nordrum, (from The Worst Person in the World) the Best Actor Award.
