Praised at Cannes as ‘a Kafkaesque saga,’ In Flames means to draw you into the dusty beauty of Karachi to witness the hard choices that must be made to survive another day. Pakistan’s Oscars candidate, In Flames follows Mariam, who lives with her younger brother and their mother in a tiny apartment in Karachi. When Mariam’s grandfather passes, they are faced with mounting debts. Distraught by her mother’s weakness, uncle’s demands, and patriarchal pressure, Mariam becomes consumed by nightmares that gradually begin to bleed into reality. ‘With In Flames I mean to explore the consequences of living in the confines of a fiercely patriarchal society,’ says Pakistani-Canadian director Zarrar Kahn, ‘to illuminate the psychological impact of gendered oppression and the horror of being young and in love in Pakistan.’
This film is screened with the kind contribution of the Embassy of Canada.
This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
