French writer, actress, and photographer Carole Achache committed suicide in 2016, leaving behind thousands of photographs, sound recordings and letters. Her daughter, filmmaker Mona Achache, claimed that her mother’s death initially gave her an illusion of liberation. However, she was actually avoiding her mother’s story, her origins. For a long time, she does not touch any objects, rejects all bonds with her mother. In time, he cannot resist the urge to inspect the items, and discovers aspects of her mother that she never knew. This whole process leads to the desire to create a film about her. For this act of resurrection, Mona goes beyond what’s real and calls upon actors to play the people that were important in her mother’s life. Halfway between a documentary and fiction, Premiered at Cannes, Little Girl Blue was especially praised for Marion Cotillard’s powerful performance as Carole Achache: ‘she is at the top of her art.’
