2024 Berlin Audience Award–Panorama
‘A woman never stops feeling alive.’ Premiered at the Panorama section of the Berlinale in February Memories of a Burning Body expresses deepest thoughts on pleasure, desire, marriage, love, sexuality, and women through the memory and intimacy of three women over 65. Raised in a repressive era where sexuality was taboo, these three women found their understanding of womanhood based on unspoken rules and implicit impositions. Now, their fearless voices incarnate in a single 65-year-old woman on screen, who revisits a kaleidoscopic life of intertwined memories, secrets, and hidden desires. This is the second feature film by Costa Rican writer-director Antonella Sudasassi Furniss who says ‘Memories of a Burning Body is the conversation I never had with my grandmothers. It is the collective outcry of women, who, despite taboos, dare to talk about their most intimate secrets.’
This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
