‘At the beginning, Etienne was 20, and he suspected nothing...’ These few operatic words launch No Love Lost –a poetic family dramedy that is funny and moving all at once. Étienne is barely twenty when he falls in love with Valérie, and still young when their daughter Rosa is born. And then, one day, Valérie leaves and never returns. He chooses not to make a drama of it, and builds a happy life for himself and his child. Sixteen years later, when young Rosa is about to lead her own life, Étienne recognizes his wife in a TV newsreel. The past brutally resurfaces, and father and daughter are propelled into one last chaotic family journey. No Love Lost, screened at Cannes Critics’ Week as the closing film, is inventive and rhythmic that never stays still but always seriously handles its subject matter remaining charming and sentimental. ‘Yes, it’s a sort of magical filter applied to reality that I’m looking for,’ says director Erwan Le Duc, ‘the idea that something surreal can pop up at any time, in any way. To surprise the viewer, but also to surprise myself, surprise the crew, with the way something is shot and made.’

This film is screened with the kind contribution of Institut Français.

This film was a Meetings on the Bridge participant.
